Neuer talked after being under fire in Germany: I didn't know what I was singing
MANUEL NEUER reacted after being under fire in his motherland because he was singing the song "Lijepa li si" (You are beautiful) by a far-right Croatian nationalist Thompson.
The German media paid a great deal of attention to Neuer's performance of the well-known Croatian patriotic song:
"It's a patriotic song that celebrates different Croatian regions. The problem is that 'Herzeg-Bosnia,' a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which Croats self-proclaimed as a part of Croatia; during the war in the 90s, they made an autonomous region out of it and wanted to make it a statelet. The Croats came to Herzeg-Bosnia by ethnically cleaning its territory from the Bosniaks and the Serbs, and in doing so, they massacred civilians of those nationalities, and massively stole their properties. So formed Herzeg-Bosnia is celebrated in the song as "a proud heart." Marko Perkovic Thompson sings the song, and he is known to praise the Croatian fascism. He proved that by singing the song 'Jasenovac i Gradiška Stara', a song which glorifies the killings of Serbs, Jews, and the Romani people in these Ustasha concentration camps, who were the Croatian allies of the nazis in WW2. That's why Thompson isn't allowed to enter or sing in several European countries."
After these statements, along with the questions "Does Neuer even know what songs is he singing and by which singer?" got the central spot in the German media, a German giant of world football and a legend of Bayern and Elf, made comments:
"I don't speak Croatian, so I didn't know what I was singing or who the singer was." It's the message that was sent to the Bild and Sport1.
However, the videos of Neuer singing "Lijepa li si" show that he is very good at Croatian:
